Know your farmer.
Rudy Knitel was on hay business in Italy when he had a fresh and delicious that changed his life. When he returned to Alberta, he and his wife Faye started Galimax with a focus on importing high-end European food for the restaurant market. They quickly grew a strong customer base throughout the province. By 2006, their focus shifted to sourcing locally-grown, organic products from southern Alberta farmers and selling them directly to restaurants that embraced the farm-to-table freshness philosophy.
Rudy was buying organic dairy products in southern Alberta when he met the son of one of his suppliers. Despite a 52-year age difference, the two hit it off, and before long, Corné Mans became Rudy’s business partner. Since 2011, the pair have expanded Galimax by focusing on relationships, including an annual tour where chefs from across the province are bussed from farm to farm to experience first-hand what local organic farmers are producing.
A growing vision
Our vision is to foster a farm-to-table food culture where every restaurant, chef and consumer knows the farmer who has grown what they’re cooking and eating.
We do this by connecting Alberta producers, makers and consumers of food in their love for local, farm-fresh goodness. Our approach to doing this is fair and transparent. We source the best, organically grown produce, dairy and eggs from southern Alberta farmers. Then we market their products to discerning restaurants and chefs throughout Alberta who want to serve locally-grown food to their customers. The outcome is good for everyone, from boosting local economies, celebrating the efforts and innovations of organic farmers and bringing the freshest food to the plates of food lovers across the province.
